About the Faculty ... of Economic and Management Sciences DepartmentsThe Faculty consists of two departments, namely the Department of Business Administration and the Department of Economics. These departments are renowned for its quality tuition and students can expect to receive professional guidance by highly qualified professors and tutors, supported by excellent learning support material throughout your period of study. Career-Oriented DegreesOur six undergraduate degrees, each with its three programmes and 18 courses are designed to educate you for a career in the business world. The BBA and five specialized BCom degrees will provide an excellent background in a wide field of management, economic and financial career opportunities. Bachelor of Business AdministrationThe BBA degree is suitable not only for students who wish to acquire a broad-based training for a career in the business sector, but also for graduates who wish to complement their degrees with a more business-oriented qualification. The degree offers students the opportunity of pursuing careers in the business world, inter alia as managers, entrepreneurs or functional specialists in, for example, finance, marketing or human resource management. Bachelor of Commerce DegreesYou have a choice between a general BCom degree and one which specializes in a particular direction. Your work environment, interests and long-term career goal will play a large role in your selection. If you are uncertain or need a degree that is tailored to your own specific needs, then the general BCom degree would be your best choice. If you wish to specialize then select the direction which best addresses your needs and interests. Bachelor of CommerceThis is a general degree which can be tailored to specific needs and is known as the BCom degree. This degree is suitable for students who want to follow careers as managers in any sector of the economy or in small, medium and large enterprises as functional, general or executive managers. The degree will also enable graduates to work as management consultants or to manage their own companies. Bachelor of Commerce in ManagementIn modern society important work is done by individuals such as executive managers, deans, general managers, strategic managers, shop managers, restaurant managers, production managers, marketing managers, superintendents or entrepreneurs running their own businesses, to name but a few. These individuals may work in different organizations or enterprises with different goals, but they all have one factor in common: they practise management. The society and economy as a whole depend on the goods and services provided by organizations which are managed by individuals with managerial skills. The training of sufficient managers is crucial in terms of a country's growth and wealth. This degree is suitable for students who want to follow careers as managers in any sector of the economy, the public sector or in small, medium and large enterprises as functional, general or executive managers. The degree will also enable graduates to work as management consultants or to manage their own companies. Bachelor of Commerce in Human Resource ManagementThis specialized degree will provide career opportunities as human resource managers, training managers, personnel consultants, labour relations managers, compensation managers and employment managers. Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing ManagementThis specialized degree opens career opportunities as marketing managers, marketing planning managers, advertising managers, sales managers, product managers, brand managers, sales representatives or marketing consultants in the manufacturing, services or retail industries. Bachelor of Commerce in Financial ManagementIn this specialized field, you are trained to become a financial manager in any small or large company, insurance companies and companies offering consultation services, to name but a few. Opportunities for self-employment as financial consultants are also enhanced by this degree. Postgraduate StudyThe Faculty offers more than undergraduate study. Once you have obtained a degree in our Faculty, you may register for an honours degree or a postgraduate diploma. After passing your honours degree, you may register for a Master's degree for which you have to submit a dissertation. On completion of the Master's degree, a Doctor's degree represents the highest step on your academic ladder (also called academic path). The academic ladder is schematically presented as follows:
