Planning an Academic Path

Different possibilities are illustrated:

  1. The straightforward succession of qualifications up to Honours.
  2. A Bachelor with the addition of a specialization endorsement.
(An endorsement is made up from extra courses in a different field: 70+ credits)
  3. The same endorsement earned over three years plus earned courses.
  4. A Bachelor of any field with a post-graduate diploma in a different field.
(See note below about changing direction of field with 140 discipline credits)

Rules about credits

Rule 1: Each academic year has a value of 120+ credits, a Bachelor has 150.

Rule 2: An endorsement is a field concentration in a different field and has a value of 70+ (18% of 390) credits above the Bachelor of 390 credits.

Rule 3: Endorsement credits are split up over the three academic years by taking at least 2 courses per academic year in the chosen field.

Rule 4: Separate courses, practicals and RPL may complete a qualification.

Rule 5: A Post-graduate Diploma has a credit value of 150 credits. It takes the place of an honours qualification if a student makes a change of direction and it then has a value of 140 credits in one field to prepare for a Masters in that field.

See rules 6 to 9 dealing with Discipline Majors

Note: The level of 510 credits indicates the completion of an Honours qualification and sets the basis for taking the Major programme in a field (discipline) which is handled by the CU faculty of that discipline. To qualify for a Masters in a particular discipline, the honours must be in that same discipline. If the candidate (student) wishes to change direction, (does not want to take the honours in his/her current direction) this can be accomplished by taking a post-graduate diploma in a new field (discipline) with courses specializing in the new field having a value of at least 140 credits.
